January 2006

These photographs were taken on the day we left the cottage for the last time (~Jan 2006)

  • Living Room
A lovely shot of the original inglenook fireplace we found after ripping out the hideous old tiled one.
Another shot of the fireplace and the new electric cupboard housing the up rated consumer unit.  The cupboard was built using off cuts left over from the solid oak flooring - the handles are spares left over from the kitchen.
A shot of the new front door and bulls eye window.  The piece of wall where it all started to look very wrong is also shown - looking decidedly better.
A shot from the living room into the kitchen.  Behind the glass panelled door is the staircase (just visible) - the space under the stairs has been left open for installation of a fridge/freezer (not supplied) and for storage.
  • Kitchen/Breakfast Room
Shot from the staircase into the kitchen.  The worktops are solid wood and the sink is ceramic.  The mixer taps were a bargain at £30 off Ebay.  As well as the electric oven and gas hob - there is also an integrated washing machine in the facing cupboard.
A shot from the breakfast room into the kitchen.  The exposed timberwork is the original rear wall of the property (albeit rebuilt).  The oven, hob and cooker hood can be seen
A shot from the kitchen out into the breakfast room showing the French doors and combi-boiler.  The cupboard under the combi boiler was (as with the electric cupboard in the living room) built from off cuts left over from the oak flooring.
  • Master Bedroom
Shot into the master bedroom (from the door) showing the small window overlooking the road.  The vaulted ceilings really added to the sense of space in what is actually - not a bad sized room.  The wood protruding from the wall is actually part of the timber structure and was left showing intentionally.
Another shot of the bedroom looking towards new stud wall and door.  This wall was built in order to give the property a proper landing.
Another shot of the master bedroom showing the vaulted ceiling more clearly.  Its difficult to imagine how low the ceilings were before - but they started at the bottom of the vault (obviously) and were extremely low - especially after installation of the new floor joists which were deeper than the originals and therefore raised the floor by a couple of inches.
  • Bathroom
Shot into the bathroom showing (albeit poorly) the curved glass screen of the shower-bath.  We tried to keep it as simple as possible.  The border tiles and odd tile insert helped to add interest into what would have been a fairly plain white room (thanks to Ocean Bathrooms Ltd for suggesting this choice of tiling).
Another shot of the bathroom (not a very good one) showing the heated towel rail behind the door and the vaulted ceilings with spotlights.
  • Stairs/Landing
A shot of the new staircase.  We left the area under the stairs open to allow for a refrigerator and storage.
  • Bedroom 2
A shot showing the vaulted ceiling in the extension.  Again this gave a small room a greater sense of space.  The window gives wonderful views out over the gardens the rear of the property.
  • Exterior
A shot towards the rear of the property.  We decided on black shiplap instead of cream render as it was in keeping with the outbuilding that border this and many other properties in the village.
We planted out the small raised garden to the rear of the cottage.  This had completely grown over with grass and ground elder which took some digging out.
