March 2005

These photographs were taken in March 2005 (after the first filming day but before the first interview with Sarah).  We have started to remove the plaster.  The corner between the window and the door is the place where we were filmed removing the first piece of plaster - and the moment we sort of realised exactly what we had taken on.

  • Living Room
Where it all began to look horribly wrong.  This wall was the first place we began to strip the plaster from (shown in the show).  The timber underneath was in really poor condition.  The hole in the ceiling (top left) came in really handy for getting all of the plaster down from upstairs.
Another shot of the living room.  Considering how bad the damp was in the property - most of the laths were in fairly good condition and we didn't have to replace many.  The ones that we did have to replace were recycled from elsewhere in the house.
Looking into the kitchen.  The wall at bottom right had suffered quite badly with damp and rot.  We had to replace many of the sole plates and install a physical as well as a chemical DPC to stop this reoccurring.  Whilst pulling all of the rubble out of this wall - a couple of horseshoes fell out.  Perhaps this was some kind of good luck symbol.  We put them back before re-plastering.
  • Master Bedroom
The timbers upstairs were in a lot better condition than those downstairs (with the exception of the floor and ceiling joists).  We had to do very little to these walls once the plaster was stripped.
